Royal costumes from 1000 years ago reconstructed by archaeologists from the UW Faculty of Archaeology, the UW Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology and designers from the SWPS University will be able to see them during a unique show in Poland!

The unique robes of rulers, royal mothers and a bishop from medieval Nubia were recreated based on paintings from the cathedral in Faras in Sudan discovered by Polish archaeologists in the 1960s. The project entitled: “Creations of power. The image of the royal family and the clergy in medieval Nubia” led by Dr. Karel Innemée included Dr. Dobrochna Zielińska from the UW Faculty of Archaeology and Dr. Magdalena Woźniak-Eusèbe from the UW Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology.

The costumes, recreated in collaboration with designers from SWPS University, were presented at the Musée du Louvre, and then at the Bode-Museum in Berlin. Now, the garments from 10 centuries ago will “come to life” on models from Sudan during a show at the Copernicus Science Centre.
